The oldest solar observatory in the Americas has been found, suggesting the existence of early, sophisticated Sun cults, scientists report.

Fascinating indeed. Here's a link to the satellite imagery on Google maps. The green arrow is pointing to the ridge that I believe the towers to be situated on, with the other structures just to the west.

Good spotting lauracle007 and Tony Angelo!
I think the thirteen towers are actually a bit more ESE and can be seen at this Google maps URL.
As you can see, there are old ruins all around the area. I do wish there was a way to know what they are/were.

By Jove, you're right! I can't believe I missed that the first time around.

I believe that at NewScientist.com is about the same phenomenon, entitled "Chankillo."

That didn't come out right. Sorry.
It should have read, "I believe that this article at NewScientist.com" etc.
As for the link, how can I paste something useful here? Let's try these.
http: / / space.newscientist.com / article.ns?id=dn11281
I pressed the spacebar before and after the slashes. That includes between ".com" and "article." Omit the spaces yourself when you type it into the location field of your web browser.

Here is the same thing with spaces all over, to give you an idea of what it should be.
h t t p : / / s p a c e . n e w s c i e n t i s t . c o m / a r t i c l e . n s ? i d = d n 1 1 2 8 1
Or type "site:space.newscientist.com Thirteen Towers of Chankillo" into Google.
If I remember, I'll come back and edit the post after enough weeks go by that the system decides I'm not a spammer. It's an automated thing, right? How many weeks does it take?

Earthman, Welcome to the vine.

You can create a hyperlink in your comments by highlighting the text that you want to hyperlink, then press the "link" button, then a dialog box will appear where you can paste the link. The necessary HTML will be auto-coded for you. Or you can do it old school by writing out the HTML. Either way works. Don't forget to look at the preview pane below the text box when you do so.

I believe you can seed a link right from signing up, but rather than going to the main site it gets to sit in The Greenhouse for a while until someone votes on it. At least, that is the way I think it works.

Thanks, Tony.
I've been a while in "read-only mode" (self-imposed) for a little while, so I knew what did or didn't fit here before making a fool of myself. :-) I think they prevent us from links at first, until we prove we aren't spammers, which is fine by me, I prefer that to a site all about, well, I don't dare mention "the V word" in case it flags me as a result. ;-)
I like what I've seen of the site so far and don't mind the restrictions on newbies if that's what makes the place work out. People are great here too, and I definitely feel "smarter" by being here, as they say.
